Forty Yemeni non-governmental organizations expressed their deep disappointment at the continued failure of the United Nations to hold the Houthi group accountable regarding the politicization of humanitarian aid and the commission of gross human rights violations, according to a statement.
The organizations called for firm and immediate measures to be taken against the Houthi group. While they accused the group of diverting humanitarian aid for military purposes and enhancing its military power.
The organizations, in a joint statement they addressed to UN and Western officials, donors and diplomats, criticized what they called the “unfortunate inaction” of the new Resident Coordinator, Julian Harness, whom they described as following an “approach More lenient towards the Houthis,” which threatens the effectiveness and credibility of the United Nations in dealing with the crisis.
The organizations called for the suspension of UN projects in areas under the control of the Iranian-backed group, and the transfer of headquarters to Aden until it shows a true commitment to humanitarian principles and international law and immediate release. And unconditionally on behalf of all detained hostages, including United Nations employees, workers in non-governmental organizations, and civil society leaders.
This call comes in light of the continued deterioration of the humanitarian conditions in Yemen and fears of a worsening of the crisis if the United Nations does not take serious and concrete steps to address the challenges. List.
