Socotra Governorate faces a great danger from Cyclone “Tej”, which is approaching its coast very quickly. The storm, which has an Indian name meaning “quick” or “quick,” has begun to show its effects on the region through heavy rains and torrential torrents.
The Weather Forecast and Early Warning Center said that Cyclone “Tej” is classified as a Category 2 hurricane and is moving west-northwest at a speed of 18 km/h. The center added that the wind speed around the hurricane's center reached 150 km/h, and that it is expected to hit the coast of Socotra in the coming hours.
In light of these developments, the local authorities in Socotra called on all citizens to take preventive measures and stay away from low-lying areas, waterways, and beaches. It also asked them to follow the instructions and guidelines issued by the competent authorities to limit the damage that may be caused to lives and property.
The authorities indicated that they are working to prepare shelters, hospitals, and relief teams to confront any emergency that may result from Cyclone Tej. It confirmed that it is constantly monitoring the weather conditions and updates from the air center to take appropriate measures.
This is the second time that Socotra has been exposed to a strong hurricane this year, as the governorate was severely affected by Hurricane “Shabala” last March, which claimed the lives of 12 people and caused great material damage.
