A health official in Taiz announced, on Wednesday, that the number of victims of the cholera epidemic in Taiz Governorate had risen to 36 deaths, and more than 5,000 infections since the beginning of this year.
Tayseer Al-Sami, media official at the Ministry of Health office in Taiz Governorate, said in a statement to the German News Agency: “The number of deaths due to cholera in the governorate has risen to 36 cases, since the beginning of this year.”
He added that “the number of cholera cases in the governorate reached 5,045 cases, of which 706 cases were confirmed by laboratory examination.”
Regarding the spread of dengue fever, Al-Samaie explained that “health authorities have monitored 1,898 cases from the beginning of this year until today, without recording any deaths from this disease.”
The health official also indicated that “cases of measles in the governorate amounted to 1,171 suspected cases, including 8 deaths during the same period.”
Al-Sami’i pointed out that “the continuation of diseases comes due to the great suffering faced by the health sector as a result of the repercussions of the war.”
He warned of the continued spread of diseases and epidemics due to the continuation of the rainy season in the country, stating that the situation requires urgent intervention from donors to provide the requirements of the health sector, which is facing one of the most difficult stages due to lack of funding.
It is noteworthy that about 200 people died and hundreds were injured as a result of floods in several Yemeni governorates, since the beginning of last August, amid international warnings of humanitarian and health consequences resulting from the floods.
