Health authorities in Taiz Governorate, southern Yemen, have recorded 910 cases of cancer since the beginning of this year 2024.
The media official at the Ministry of Health office in Taiz, Tayseer Al-Sami, said, “The health authorities have monitored 910 cases of cancer in the most populous governorate in Yemen since the beginning of this year, including 290 cases of breast cancer, which constitute nearly a third of the cases.”
Al-Sami’i added to the German News Agency (DPA) that “cancer is one of the diseases of our time, but the difficult conditions in Yemen, such as malnutrition, weak health sectors, and lack of popular awareness, are among the most prominent causes of the disease.”
The health official attributed the spread of breast cancer to the lack of early diagnosis and treatment by those infected and ignorance of the nature of the disease, as well as other factors related to the lack of capabilities of citizens to pay attention to health and conduct periodic examinations, and the distance of specialized health centers.
Al-Samai called on all citizens, both male and female, to interact positively with the pink campaign for breast cancer prevention implemented by the National Cancer Control Foundation in the governorate, and to be sure to conduct periodic examinations to reduce the risks of this disease, which can be cured if the patient is cared for early.
During the month of October of each year, a breast cancer awareness campaign is implemented in Yemen, with the aim of pushing women to seek early medical examination to reduce the possibility and effects of contracting this disease, which may cause great risks to women’s health.
