The agricultural sector in the southeastern areas of the center of Tur Al-Baha District, Lahj Governorate, witnessed major damage as a result of the flow of torrents resulting from heavy rains, which swept through Wadi Al-Sahar, Wadi Nafakhah (Al-Shu’bah), and a number of other valleys during the past week. These floods damaged large areas of agricultural land in the areas of Sahar, Haqqat, Al-Ghoul, and Al-Shu'bah.
A number of farmers, including farmer Abdul Hafez Nasher, explained that the floods caused large amounts of agricultural crops to be swept away, and the irrigation canals and buffers that protected the lands were destroyed.
They indicated that the damage was severe, which led to their inability to repair what was destroyed due to the high cost of renting agricultural machinery as a result of the high prices of petroleum derivatives, in addition to the difficult economic conditions that citizens are going through.
The farmers stressed that the agricultural sector is a vital source of livelihood for them, and that the damage resulting from the floods threatens food security and the local economy in general. The area affected by the floods reached hundreds of acres, which directly affected the livelihood of thousands of residents, as the floods swept away agricultural crops and trees that served as buffers.
Farmers also pointed out that the irrigation infrastructure was also severely damaged, which will increase their suffering in practicing their agricultural and livestock activities. They appealed to government agencies and humanitarian organizations to quickly provide support and assistance to repair the damage and restore agricultural activity in the region.
