The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stressed in his statements the importance of reducing the escalation in the Red Sea to avoid further instability in the region, as Houthi militia attacks on cargo ships have continued for about a year.
Grundberg's statements came at the conclusion of his two-day visit to Cairo, during which he met with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel Aty, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, where he discussed with them the political, security and economic situation in Yemen, according to a statement issued by his office. .
The UN envoy expressed his increasing concern about the repercussions of the regional escalation on the chances of achieving peace in Yemen, stressing that the stability and peace of Yemen are a basic necessity for the security of the entire region.
Grundberg pointed out that the escalation in the Red Sea poses a major threat to regional stability, negatively affecting vital maritime navigation routes. He called for urgent measures to reduce escalation and avoid further destabilization.
The statement also addressed the importance of maintaining the progress achieved through the commitments made by the parties regarding a nationwide ceasefire, strengthening the economy, and resuming a comprehensive political process, in addition to examining ways for Egypt to support these efforts.
The UN envoy also referred to the issue of arbitrary detentions practiced by the Houthis, which targeted dozens of United Nations employees, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and diplomats. He briefed the interlocutors on the ongoing efforts made by the United Nations to ensure the safety and protection of all detainees.
