The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to vote next Wednesday on a draft resolution to extend the sanctions regime imposed on Yemen, ahead of the expiration of the sanctions on November 15.
This step comes at a sensitive time, as the Council is expected to witness an important session to discuss the renewal of sanctions that include financial measures, such as freezing assets, in addition to a travel ban, and a ban on the supply of weapons to entities and individuals accused of undermining peace, security and stability in Yemen.
The resolution also includes renewing the mandate of the Sanctions Committee’s expert group, which operates under Resolution 2140 of 2014, and monitors and implements these measures.
It is expected that the draft resolution will be voted on without major changes to the current mandate, given the ongoing challenges in the Yemeni file, which require the continuation of these measures.
It is noteworthy that the sanctions regime is renewed annually, usually for a period of one year, with the renewal of the mandate of the expert group of the sanctions committee, which contributes significantly to following up and monitoring the implementation of the resolution and studying the situation on the ground.
