UN rapporteurs called for full compliance with the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
United Nations rapporteurs published a joint statement yesterday, Tuesday, in which they welcomed the International Criminal Court’s decision, reminding countries of their legal and moral obligations to uphold international law and punish war criminals.
The statement indicated that the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and that those warrants can help save lives, and must be fully respected and complied with.
The statement of the UN rapporteurs stressed that the International Criminal Court’s decision is for the sake of justice and accountability, constitutes a historic step, and represents a hope for ending decades of impunity for long-term violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Excluding Israel from accountability..
He considered that the exclusion of Israel from accountability for a long time was a factor in the escalation of violence in the region, stressing that this situation affects the lives and future of Palestinians and Israelis alike.
He stressed that independent experts have obtained documented evidence of grave violations of international law committed against the civilian population in connection with Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories since October 7, 2023.
On November 21, the International Criminal Court issued two arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant, on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the ongoing genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Under the court’s decision - which does not have police personnel to implement it - its member states became legally obligated to arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they entered their territories, and hand them over to the International Criminal Court to take legal measures against them.
However, the United States - which supports the genocide that Israel has been committing for more than a year in Gaza - expressed its rejection of the two arrest warrants, considering that the court does not have the authority to sue Israel, according to a statement issued by a spokesman for the US National Security Council in the White House.< /p>
The Israeli aggression on Gaza left more than 149,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that killed dozens of children and the elderly, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
