The United Nations reported that thousands of women and girls in Yemen are in need of urgent assistance following Hurricane (Tej), which struck a number of coastal governorates in the south of the country.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said in a press release, “With the destruction of the hurricane (Teague) for families and infrastructure in coastal areas of southern Yemen. There are more than 3,000 pregnant women in need of life-saving health services.”
The statement added that the tropical storm caused severe damage to more than 10,000 families in the governorates of Al-Mahra, Socotra, and Hadramaut. While disrupting the ability to access health services, which would cause life-threatening repercussions for about 500 pregnant women who may be exposed to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
He pointed out that the rapid response mechanism led by the Fund has registered about 11,000 families consisting of 72 families. One thousand people were affected by the hurricane, to receive emergency relief bags, with support from the European Union, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United States Agency for International Development, and the Humanitarian Fund in Yemen.
The Fund confirmed that, in cooperation with other UN agencies, it continues to send emergency supplies to help families affected by Hurricane, including life-saving medicines and reproductive health kits, ready-to-eat foods, hygiene kits and dignity kits for women.
