The latest World Health Organization reports revealed a huge increase in cholera cases in Yemen, as the country recorded the highest infection rate in the world during the current year.
According to the organization, the total number of suspected cases of cholera in Yemen as of December 1 reached about 249,900 cases, with 861 deaths related to the disease recorded. These numbers are shocking, as they represent about 35% of the total cases of cholera worldwide, and 18% of the total deaths.
The World Health Organization confirmed that Yemen has been suffering from an ongoing cholera outbreak for years, and the country witnessed the largest cholera outbreak in modern history between 2017 and 2020. The current situation is exacerbated by several factors, including the ongoing conflict, deteriorating health infrastructure, and lack of clean water and sanitation.
The organization warned that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is getting worse, and that the cholera outbreak represents a serious threat to the lives of millions. She called on the international community to provide the necessary support to Yemen to confront this epidemic, and to provide basic health services to the affected population.
