The International Organization for Migration recorded the return of about 1,800 migrants from Ethiopia who returned from Yemen voluntarily and via sea trips.
The organization stated in its latest report on “monitoring the flow of arriving and departing migrants,” that it monitored a total of 1,784 Ethiopian migrants stranded in Yemen, who left for their country, during the month of December 2024.
The report added that the worsening humanitarian crisis that Yemen is going through forced many migrants to make the “difficult decision” to voluntarily return to their countries of origin in the Horn of Africa, while others were deported by government authorities.
The organization’s Displacement Matrix (DTM) in Yemen indicated that all the returnees last month left from the coast of Ras al-Ara in Lahj towards the Djiboutian city of Obock, on 12 “risky” sea journeys via boats, and 82% of them were men. The number of people was 1,460, while women represented 14% (256 women), compared to 4% of children (68 boys and girls).
The report stated that the Displacement Tracking Matrix team in Djibouti recorded the arrival of a total of 1,081 migrants (90% men, 8% women, and 2% children) to the Djiboutian coast on boat trips from the Yemeni coast. The Omani authorities also deported 80 Ethiopian migrants who tried to Entering its territory, to the Devin point in the Shehn District in Al-Mahra Governorate, eastern Yemen.
The total number of African migrants arriving in Yemen during the period between January and December 2024 was about 60,897 migrants, and Yemen hosts the equivalent of this number on its territory.
