Widespread spread of measles in Ibb Governorate

Ibb Governorate has witnessed hundreds of cases of measles recorded since the beginning of this year, in various directorates of the governorate under the control of the Houthi militia.
The World Health Organization stated, in a recent report, that the number of deaths from measles has reached 16 cases, in various districts of Ibb Governorate, since the beginning of this year.
According to the World Health Organization, the number of suspected cases of measles in Ibb Governorate has reached 1,584 cases since the beginning of this year 2023, noting that this year witnessed a significant increase in the number of deaths and infected people, noting that the increase represents 68% over the same period. The period last year during which 943 cases of infection were recorded.
The report stated that the areas with the most recorded cases of measles were in the districts of Yarim, Al-Udayn, Al-Qaffar, and Al-Sabra, and in the last week of last October, 34 cases of infection were reported, with one death related to the disease in the district of Yarim.
The Health Cluster report, led by the World Health Organization, confirmed that 2,563 suspected cases of measles were recorded in Ibb and the Houthi-controlled areas in Taiz Governorate, with 21 deaths related to the disease, during the period between January and October 2023.
The report added that the cases of infection recorded this year represent an increase of 114% over the same period last year 2022, which witnessed the recording of 1,197 cases of infection in the two governorates.
It is noteworthy that the Houthi militia refuses to implement vaccination campaigns in the areas under its control, which has led to an increase in virus infections and outbreaks that can be prevented by vaccination.
It is worth noting that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can spread easily in densely populated places. It mostly affects children under the age of five and is particularly dangerous for those with underlying health conditions or complications. Although it is a potentially contagious disease, It is fatal, but it is possible to prevent it through vaccines that are subjected to systematic campaigns by the Houthi militia.
