An ongoing oil spill off the coast of Aden threatens the environment and public health

The expert concerned with climate and environment, Wim Zuen Borg, revealed the presence of continuous and visible oil spills in rusty ships, off the coast of the capital, Aden.
Wim noted that several small spills and a larger leak in heavy fuel oil or crude oil have been spotted in satellite images at the Port of Aden over the past few months.
He reported that the tanker SICHEM PENOL began leaking oil in early May 2023, with the large spill moving towards the beaches in the northwest in the port of Aden, and continuing into June 2023.
He stressed that water pollution poses a major health and environmental threat to citizens and fishermen in Aden, as it can cause contamination of ground and surface water, harm coral reefs and marine life, and increase the risk of disease.
Informed sources reported that the ship from which the oil leaked was one of the Al-Eisi ships sunk in front of the port of Aden, which was carrying a load of heavy fuel.
The sources called on the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to stop the oil leak, clean the affected area, and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
