7,000 Somali refugees have returned to their country in the last four years

A UN report stated that nearly 7,000 Somali refugees returned to their country from Yemen during the last four years.
According to data contained in an “infographic” issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a total of 6,916 Somali refugees left Yemen on return trips to their country during the period between 2020 and 2023.
Data indicate that the majority of Somali refugees’ return trips to their country during this period were spontaneous, as 4,717 refugees returned spontaneously, representing 68% of the total returnees, while UNHCR helped 32%, or 2,199 refugees, to return.< /p>
The year 2021 topped the list by recording the return of 2,266 Somali refugees, all on spontaneous trips, followed by the year 2022, which witnessed the return of 1,807 refugees (1,216 spontaneous and 591 assisted), then the year 2023 until November with 1,648 (369 spontaneous and 1,279 assisted). ), while 2020 was the lowest year for the return of Somali refugees, with a number of 1,195 (866 spontaneous and 329 assisted).
The UNHCR indicated that it had monitored the spontaneous return of 42,984 Somali refugees from Yemen since March 2015, and it had also supported 93,721 others to return to their country since December 2014.
According to recent UN statistics, the total number of refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen is 71,760 people, 64% of whom are Somalis, with their number reaching 45,797 people.
