A document revealed official fears in the capital, Aden, about a repeat of the flood disaster that the Libyan city of Derna witnessed about two weeks ago, which left thousands dead and missing.
On September 10, Hurricane "Daniel" swept several cities in eastern Libya, but disaster struck in the city of Derna after the rains brought by the hurricane caused two old dams to collapse, sweeping away about a quarter of the city's buildings, including those inside them, into the sea.
This disaster prompted the director of the office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in Aden, Aidroos Al-Sulaimani, to send an official letter to the governor, in which he warned against repeating the Derna disaster in the city, with the climate changes that the world has witnessed in recent years, pointing out in his speech that one of the reasons for the disaster witnessed The city of Derna stated that part of the city was built in a valley in which construction is prohibited.
Warning of "a similar situation in the city of Aden in the area (Al-Haswah and Bir Ahmed), where housing has been built in the valley, which may lead to a disaster - God forbid. Also, the construction of the Al-Al-Al-Husseini road has become a dam to divert torrents to the villages and the city of Aden." As he said.
The Director of the Agricultural Office in Aden confirmed that “Wadi Tuban is the one that represents the danger to Aden,” calling for a meeting to be held between the authorities of Aden and Lahj and the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries to come up with appropriate solutions to avoid any disasters in the future.
Local sources warned of the danger of repeating the Derna scene in the capital, Aden. As a result of the encroachment of random construction in the city, which affected the course of torrents and valleys, this was embodied in the heavy rains that the city witnessed, especially in the Crater area, in April 2020.
The sources indicated that the densely populated Al-Haswah area, the largest part of which is currently on the valley course branching off from Wadi Tuban, and two residential cities have recently been built on the final mouth of the valley towards the sea.
What doubles the severity of the disaster - according to the sources - is the increasing number of “burrows” north of Aden, close to Wadi Tuban, which in the event of heavy rains can turn into miniature dams that threaten to flood towards Aden, as happened in the Libyan city of Derna.< /p>
The sources recalled the flood disaster that occurred in the Hadhramaut Valley in October 2008, which caused the death of about 100 people, after the floods swept away hundreds of homes that were built on the stream of the floods and valleys.
In this context, the government directed, at its meeting on Thursday, the formation of a ministerial committee to reconstitute the Supreme Emergency Committee and its technical committees to accommodate the rapid response to disasters, emergencies and national crises, and to prepare an integrated project and present it to the Council of Ministers, based on the presentation submitted by the Minister of Public Health and Population.
