The Governor of the Socotra Archipelago Governorate, Engineer Raafat Al-Thaqali, praised the efforts made by the leadership and members of the security departments of the Hadibuh, Qalansiyah and Abdul-Kuri districts and the governorate’s rescue police in following up on khat sellers and suppliers, controlling a large quantity of khat that is sold secretly in some cases, and working to close the sellers’ shops and control their stock. And burn it in front of everyone.
Al-Thaqali urged the security services to increase their vigilance and sense of security and strengthen control over the ports and coasts to prevent the entry of qat into the governorate, arrest violators, and take the necessary legal measures against them.
Governor Al-Thaqali stressed that the decision to ban khat is irreversible and is a response to societal demands and the clear social and economic damage that the khat tree causes to society and the beautiful environment that characterizes the archipelago, and to protect generations from the bad behavior resulting from eating this alien tree that is harmful to the people of the archipelago. At the end of last September, Governor Raafat Al-Thaqli had issued Resolution No. (15) prohibiting the entry of the qat tree, with all its names, into the governorate.
