The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, visited Qatar and met with the Minister of State for International Cooperation, Lolwah Al-Khater, and other Qatari officials to discuss the importance of strengthening regional and international support for UN mediation efforts in Yemen.
The discussion covered the progress made to support the parties to agree on measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and to commit to implementing a ceasefire throughout the country, and resuming an inclusive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
Grundberg said: “While the solution to the conflict must be negotiated by the Yemenis, increased regional cohesion undoubtedly gives greater hope of reaching a solution to the situation in Yemen. The region will play a major role in accompanying Yemen on the path to peace, as well as About reconstruction and recovery.”
He welcomed the endorsement and support for reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict expressed by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
UN Envoy Grundberg also participated in the launch event of the Global Institute for Strategic Research (GISR), where he dialogued with a group of experts about possible approaches to collective action to address the challenges of peacebuilding and reconstruction in Yemen.
The discussions also focused on the link between the peace and stability of Yemen and the security of the region and international trade routes.
