The European Union Council approved continued funding support for the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) in the country's ports, even though the mechanism is no longer obligated to inspect ships arriving at Houthi ports since last April.
The document showed the decision that was approved on September 28 last, and its implementation began on the first of this month.
According to the decision, the European Union supports the continued survival of the UN mechanism (2.2 million euros) and it will continue its work until September 30, 2024.
The United Nations mechanism had stopped inspecting ships arriving at the port of Hodeidah since last April, with international optimism regarding the talks being conducted by the Houthis and Saudi officials.
The UN mechanism receives funding from several parties in addition to the European Union, such as: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada.
The ships would arrive at the Saudi port of Jeddah, or at a port in Djibouti for inspection before moving to the Houthi ports.
In April, the Yemeni government announced that the Saudi-led military coalition had canceled eight-year restrictions on imports heading to the ports of the south of the country. The Yemeni Foreign Ministry said at the time that the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) is an essential and indispensable pillar before achieving a just peace.
It considered the decline in the work of the UN investigation and inspection mechanism and the increase in the flow of goods to ports throughout the country an indication of progress in the direct talks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group allied with Iran, which means that hopes are diminishing if it remains with the same financial budget as in the previous year.
