A Pentagon spokesman said that the crew of the destroyer USS Carney operating in the northern Red Sea shot down 3 land-attack cruise missiles and drones launched by the Houthis in Yemen.
The Pentagon spokesman added that the attacks “may have been targeting Israel.”
Earlier, CNN reported, citing two officials, that the US Navy warship USS Carney intercepted, on Thursday evening, several missiles fired at it from the Yemeni coast.
One of them stated that the missiles were fired by the Houthis, while the second official stated that 2 or 3 missiles were intercepted.
The American ship USS Carney crossed the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on Wednesday.
The US Fleet Forces Command said in a post on social media that the USS Carney “will help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East.”
The American announcement came in light of the ongoing fighting between the Palestinians and Israel since the attack launched by Hamas and other factions on the seventh of last October.
The Gaza Strip has been subjected to Israeli land, air and sea bombardment since the Hamas movement and other Palestinian factions launched Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7. The Strip is also subjected to a siege that Russian President Vladimir Putin described as “unacceptable.”
The "Al-Aqsa Flood" was met with the Israeli "Iron Swords" operation, which led to the death of more than 3,700 people and the injury of more than 13,000.
On the Israeli side, 1,400 people were killed, including 306 officers and soldiers, while Hamas captured more than 200 Israelis.
It is worth noting that Israel is preparing for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
