The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced, on Wednesday, that more than 34,000 Yemeni families were affected by the floods that swept through 19 governorates in the country.
The UNHCR office in Yemen said, in a statement seen by Anadolu: “The heavy rains and floods that recently struck the country caused serious damage to more than 12,000 homes and shelters.”
He added that "more than 34 thousand families were affected by the floods in 19 governorates."
The statement continued, “The floods led to the submergence of agricultural lands, the death of livestock, and the disruption of livelihoods,” without additional details.
Since the beginning of this August, the amount of heavy rain has increased in several governorates in Yemen, causing torrents and floods that left 57 people dead in addition to severe material damage, according to UN and government reports.
Yemen suffers from severe infrastructure weakness, which has made the effects of the floods increase the tragedy of residents who complain about the fragility of basic services as a result of the repercussions of a civil war that began about 10 years ago.
