Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, met today, Tuesday in New York, with the Executive Director of World Bank Operations, Anna Purdy.
The discussion focused on areas of bilateral cooperation and ways to strengthen the existing partnership between the government and the World Bank, in the economic and development aspects, building institutional capacities, enhancing the progress achieved in the path of comprehensive reforms, and the international support required to reduce the humanitarian impacts of the financing crisis that was exacerbated by the Houthi terrorist attacks on facilities. He praised the development interventions of the World Bank in Yemen, in particular its financing for many vital projects in the sectors of health, education, agriculture, fisheries, food security, and social protection.
He also praised the World Bank's interventions in building and strengthening institutional capacities, supporting the Central Bank of Yemen, and encouraging economic growth and the resilience of the private sector, noting the long-standing partnership between the two sides.
The President also noted the opening of the World Bank's representative office in the capital, Aden, stressing the state's keenness to provide all facilities to international institutions and organizations to carry out their tasks to the fullest in various parts of the country.
Alimi renewed the request from the World Bank to pump its cash funding through the Central Bank. He also renewed the request to assist the Yemeni government in accessing financing for the green economy and climate change.
The President was briefed by the Executive Director of Operations at the World Bank on the current portfolio projects implemented by the World Bank Group in order to help restore recovery, achieve financial and economic stability, and build the peace process, as well as the Bank’s development intervention policy during the next stage.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Dr. Shaye’ al-Zindani, and the Yemeni Ambassador to the United States, Muhammad al-Hadrami.
