The Greek government announced the sending of a new frigate to join the European Union military fleet charged with protecting and securing international shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from Houthi attacks.
The Greek Navy said, in a press release, that the Minister of National Defense; Nikos Dendias, on Friday, visited the frigate (F/G SPETSAI), shortly before it sailed to the Red Sea region and the Gulf of Aden, to participate in the European mission (EUNAVFOR ASPIDES) that “defends the interests of Greece and the European Union” from the Houthi naval attacks that have been ongoing since... About a year.
During his address to the frigate’s crew while it was at the Salamina naval base, south-central of the country, Dendias stressed that the geopolitical developments in the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea make it absolutely necessary to continue the European operation, and “for us Greeks it has an additional benefit, which is A very important national benefit, it is an important step towards creating a common European defence.”
The Greek Defense Minister indicated that the “Spitsai” frigate will replace its compatriot “Psara”, which carried out its tasks in an “exemplary” manner throughout its presence in the Red Sea, and “successfully used the (CENTAUROS) anti-drone system, which is the first system "One of its kind with these capabilities is produced locally, which has been tested and confirmed for its reliability in real combat conditions."
The "Psara" frigate returned last Sunday to the Salamina Naval Base, at the conclusion of its participation in the European "ASPEEDS" mission, succeeding its compatriot "Hydra".
