The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to the Russian capital, Moscow, in which he met with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Vershinin.
According to a statement published by the envoy’s office, Grundberg expressed his deep concern about the ripple effects of the regional escalation in the Middle East on Yemen.
Grundberg said in his statement that international cooperation and diplomatic efforts are the only way to reverse the current disturbing path affecting Yemen, the Red Sea and the region.
According to the statement, Grundberg provided a briefing on his communication with the parties and regional interlocutors, and what his office is doing at the political, security and economic levels.
The statement indicated that the two sides discussed ways to build on the parties’ commitments to the peace roadmap in Yemen amid the current escalatory environment.
The statement pointed out the importance of maintaining the Security Council’s consensus on Yemen, and continuing efforts to cooperate towards reducing the escalation for the benefit of Yemen and the region.
Discussions focused on the arbitrary detention of United Nations employees, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations by the Houthi group.
Grundberg expressed his appreciation for the support of the Russian Federation, and gave a briefing on his international and personal efforts for their immediate and unconditional release, according to the statement.
This visit comes after accusations leveled by the United States against Moscow of providing military support to the Houthis.
