Today, Thursday, the United Nations held discussions with the leaders of the Houthi group in the capital, Sana’a, regarding the release of UN staff and ensuring the arrival of humanitarian aid.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Yemen, Julian Harness, said in a statement that he discussed with Jamal Amer, Foreign Minister of the Houthi government (unrecognized), and other leaders in Sanaa, the release of humanitarian workers, and ensuring the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid. .
According to the statement, Harness also discussed the UN security arrangements in Sanaa regarding visas for UN employees, which reveals the extent of the challenges faced by humanitarian workers in areas under the group’s control.
The Secretary-General, António Guterres, had urged Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to demand the Houthis to immediately release all detained United Nations employees.
The Secretary-General called for the release of all detainees, stressing that such continued measures by the Houthis “harm the work of the United Nations in Yemen, which benefits meeting the enormous needs of the suffering Yemenis.”
