The governor of Hadhramaut, Mabkhout bin Madi, called on the international community to intervene urgently to save the dire economic situation in the country, with the collapse of the currency to an unprecedented level, “caused by the violations of the Houthi militias, and their negative impact on oil export ports and international navigation,” he said.
During his meeting with the economic affairs advisor to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Anthony Biswell, the governor discussed the political and economic situation, stressing the right of the people of Hadhramaut to benefit from their wealth, and called for proper political representation of the largest Yemeni governorates in any future settlement.
He reviewed the efforts of the local authority in providing basic services and enhancing security, and the necessity of supporting international and regional efforts to end the war and bring peace.
For his part, Biswell gave a briefing on UN mediation efforts to improve the economic and humanitarian situation, stressing the importance of Hadhramaut within the course of the political process, which has faltered so far.
Calls from the people of the vast governorate have recently increased for the need to be represented in the political process, in an effort to reserve an advanced seat amid the pending issues on the Yemeni scene, in a step that reflects the desire of local communities to enhance an active role in decision-making.
