Tomorrow, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an open session on the system and procedures for the sanctions imposed on Yemen, the extension period of which expires in the middle of this month.
According to UN sources, the Council will hold an open session on Tuesday in which it will listen to a briefing from the Permanent Representative of South Korea to the United Nations. Jungkook Hwang, Chairman of the Sanctions Committee on Yemen, known as the (2140 Committee), on the sanctions measures that will end in mid-November.
In his briefing, Hwang is expected to address the latest efforts of the Sanctions Committee, the meetings it held, and its role in implementing the sanctions regime, in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. (2140) issued in 2014, which includes freezing assets and banning travel against anyone involved in Actions that threaten peace, security and stability in Yemen.
The Security Council will also review during the session the final report of the team of international and regional experts on Yemen, after the committee recently approved it and submitted it to the Council for discussion, and the recommendations it contains regarding the sanctions regime, which “are expected to be renewed for an additional period, as well as extending the mandate of the group of experts.” The concerned person affiliated with the committee.”
Tomorrow's session comes days before another Council meeting, the date of which has not yet been set, to adopt the renewal of the sanctions regime on Yemen, which is scheduled to expire on November 15, and also to extend the mandate of the Group of Experts, which expires on December 15. The Sanctions Committee consists of all fifteen members of the Security Council, and takes its decisions by consensus. The Committee holds informal consultations from time to time to discuss the midterm and final reports of the group of experts and the recommendations submitted by them in this regard and submit them to the Security Council for approval and issuance as an official document, in addition to receiving requests. Regarding the inclusion of new names in the sanctions list or the deletion and exemption of names from the list.
As for the Sanctions Committee’s expert team, it consists of five members appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The team’s mission is to help the committee carry out its tasks, provide it with periodic reports that include information related to the implementation of sanctions imposed by the Council in cases of undermining the political process, and investigate. In violations and abuses of international law committed by all parties to the conflict in Yemen.
