An international report classified Yemen as the least peaceful country in the region, and the least peaceful country on the global level, on this year’s peace index.
This was stated in the “Global Peace Index” report for 2024, through which 163 countries and territories are classified according to their levels of peace.
The classification is based on 23 indicators in three main areas: community safety and security, ongoing local and international conflicts, and militarization.
There are 3 Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa region that are included in the 2024 index among the ten least peaceful countries.
Kuwait was also classified as the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa region, ranking 25th in the index. It is one of four Arab countries in the region, which was classified as a total of 53 countries; High levels of peace have been recorded in the world.
According to the Peace Index report, this year's analyzes showed some worrying trends, with the highest number of active conflicts since World War II, and a decline in military solutions and peace agreements.
The report also presents a new measure of global military capability, which takes into account military technological development and force readiness.
The report stated that decisive resolutions to conflicts, through military victories and peace agreements, have declined significantly since the 1970s, indicating increasing challenges to achieving peace globally.
The report says: “The Middle East and North Africa remains the least peaceful region for the ninth year in a row.”
A slight deterioration was recorded during the past year, after several years of improvement, as a result of a deterioration in the average index score by 0.25%.
The report added: “The conflict in Gaza had a very strong impact on the levels of peace in the world following the events of October 7, and the retaliatory military response by Israel.”
He stressed that "the conflict in the entire Middle East region has been pushed to the abyss, with Syria, Iran, Lebanon and Yemen intertwined, and the risk of open war remains high."
The occupying state witnessed its largest deterioration in peace levels in the 2024 index, falling 11 places in the rankings to 155th place, which is its lowest level since the index was issued.
The overall score for the occupation deteriorated by 10.5%, and this is the third year in a row that Israel has witnessed a deterioration in peace levels
