Grundenberg: Anti-peace voices obstruct the implementation of the peace roadmap in Yemen

The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned today (Saturday) that the country would once again slide into a spiral of war, explaining that the warring parties and the besieged people in Yemen cannot wait endlessly for a road map for peace.
Grundberg told Agence France-Presse on the sidelines of the Manama Dialogue Forum in Bahrain: It is not possible to move forward with the road map now, because I do not believe that implementing that map will be possible, adding, “I still believe that the basis for the road map is in Yemen.” It exists, because the conflict between the Yemenis is resolvable. However, the complicating factor now is regional destabilization, such that Yemen has become an integral part through the attacks in the Red Sea.
He added: It is clear that the matter cannot remain this way indefinitely, indicating that at a certain stage, there is an expected implementation that the parties want to see happen, and if that does not happen, it is a risk of losing the necessary momentum, and this risk is clear. .
Grundberg revealed the presence of voices hostile to peace in Yemen, stressing by saying: “On this basis, we were not able to take a step forward from the commitments that were agreed upon in the year 2023 according to the road map.”
He pointed out that the road map “is not a magic wand” for Yemen, which has been plunged into one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with two-thirds of the population dependent on aid, adding: “So I believe that the responsibility that falls on us here is to ensure that this momentum is maintained.” And that the parties understand the necessity of trusting the fact that it is possible to achieve this.”
He continued: “If this does not happen, the consequences are known.” If it slides into an internal violent confrontation, I think the consequences of that are well known, and I don’t think it will be in anyone’s interest.”
The UN envoy concluded, “I think that the Yemeni people should be patient in general. I think that they have been waiting for peace for a very long time. Everyone wants this crisis to end.”
