A statement from the Office of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen said that Grundberg concluded meetings on planning and managing ceasefire operations in Yemen.
The statement - seen by the editor of Marib Press - today, Wednesday, stated: “During last week, the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen held a meeting with representatives of the Yemeni government within the Military Coordination Committee in Amman, Jordan. The meeting lasted for three days with the aim of discussing the planning processes and management of the ceasefire agreements and the subsequent transitional security arrangements.
He added: “From December 10 to 12, participants reviewed models of ceasefire agreements from around the world, and discussed the extent to which they could be implemented in the context of a future comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen.”
According to the statement, the discussion formed an important platform for exchanging ideas on pivotal issues, such as different types of ceasefires, design and planning processes, and relevant negotiation mechanisms.
Participants also received detailed briefings on options for monitoring the ceasefire and verification and supervision mechanisms, and discussed lessons learned from the truce in Yemen.
Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, stressed that “the ceasefire is a necessary step to rebuild confidence and move towards a sustainable solution to the conflict.
Such meetings lay the foundation for creating the necessary conditions for a ceasefire and achieving lasting peace in Yemen.”
The office said: “This meeting came as a continuation of the previous workshops organized by the office during the year 2023, and a continuation of the efforts and contributions of delegations of the Military Coordination Committee over the past two years.”
The principal military advisor to the UN envoy, Anthony Hayward, explained after the meeting: “These exchanges provide an important platform to reflect on global ceasefire examples while addressing the unique needs and priorities of the context in Yemen. Effective preparation and planning for a sustainable ceasefire constitutes an important step towards Achieving lasting peace and stability in Yemen.”
The discussions were moderated by a group of prominent international experts in the field of ceasefire, as part of a series of meetings presented to delegations of the Military Coordination Committee, according to the statement.
