The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced that he and his accompanying delegation were safe from a bloody Israeli attack that targeted Sanaa International Airport with a series of air strikes, while the UN official was about to board the plane at the end of a visit to the Houthi-controlled city, which he arrived on Tuesday to conduct negotiations. In order to release United Nations employees detained by the group since last June.
The senior UN official said in tweets on the X platform, “While we were about to board our plane... the airport was subjected to an aerial bombardment.”
He added, "One of our plane's crew members was injured, and at least two people were reported killed at the airport."
He confirmed that the air traffic control tower and the departure hall were damaged, "a few meters away from where we were and the runway."
He reported that he and his colleagues at the United Nations and the World Health Organization are safe.
Ghebreyesus said, "We will need to wait until the damage to the airport is repaired before we can leave."
He indicated the conclusion of his mission to negotiate the release of detained United Nations employees and assess the health and humanitarian situation in #Yemen.
The UN official did not give any details about the results of his mission, but he said, “We still demand the immediate release of the detainees.”
