At least six people were killed, and more than 70 others were injured today (Saturday) in an explosion at a domestic gas filling station in Al-Bayda Governorate, southeast of Sanaa, according to a health official affiliated with the Houthi group.
The Director General of Health and Population in Al-Bayda Governorate, Mujahid Al-Khatri, appointed by the Houthi group, told Xinhua News Agency, “An explosion occurred at a domestic gas filling station in the Al-Majreesh area of Al-Zahir District in the governorate,” located (276 km away). Al-Khatri added that the explosion killed at least six people and injured more than 70 others with various burns, according to preliminary statistics of the incident.
He indicated that dozens of injured people were transferred to multiple hospitals and health centers in the governorate.
A number of injured people were also transferred to the “Al-Hadd Yafa” area in the neighboring Lahj Governorate, according to Al-Khatri.
For his part, a local source said that the explosion occurred during the presence of “large numbers of citizens.”
The source explained that the place where the explosion occurred included three domestic gas filling stations, noting that the fires destroyed the three stations and commercial warehouses, causing “large numbers of victims” and causing significant material losses.
The source indicated that the cause of the explosion is still unknown.
Activists circulated on social media video recordings of a huge explosion in the area, and horrific pictures showing injured people fleeing the place after large fires broke out.
Al-Bayda Governorate has been under the control of the Houthi group for years.
Wide areas of Yemen have witnessed similar incidents over the past years that left civilian casualties and major losses.
