The British magazine The Economist said that the Houthi militia took advantage of the aggression against Gaza to impose fees on commercial ships in the Red Sea to achieve huge profits from ships crossing the strait.
The magazine explained that the Houthis made profits estimated at two billion dollars annually in 2024, in exchange for allowing ships safe passage through Bab al-Mandab, stressing that the militia will continue to force ships to pay after the ceasefire in Gaza.
The magazine indicated that sailing ships away from the Red Sea will raise global shipping costs to $200 billion during the year 2024.
