Shocking report: The high percentage of female circumcision in Yemen

A UN report stated that nearly one -fifth of the girls in Yemen have been circumcised, especially in the coastal areas, in which this habit with serious effects on their lives abounds.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said in a recent report: "The practice of female circumcision remains a harsh reality in Yemen, where 19% of girls have undergone this measure, especially in the coastal areas of the south and west of the country."
The report added that one in five women between (15-49 years) were subjected to circumcision.
Most of these operations are performed by traditional practitioners.
And at a time "years of conflict weakened the country's health services, such practices increase the risk of serious complications."
The UN Fund indicated that circumcision operations are rooted in Yemen, and despite its harmful physical and psychological effects, they are still continuing due to the norms and social pressures, fear of ostracism, the absence of legal prohibitions, and the lack of awareness of their dangers.
The report pointed out that the battle against female circumcision in Yemen has not yet ended, and we must support the networks operating on the ground, enhance survivors, and pushing changes in policies that protect the most vulnerable groups.
The United Nations Population Fund called for the need to cooperate to end female circumcision and protect their future.
The fund said: “No girl should suffer in silence, and no mother should bear the pain caused by the loss of her child because of this outdated tradition. It is time to break this circle and listen to silent cries. It is time To move to protect the rights and welfare of Yemeni girls, their future depends on that. ”
