The Euro -Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights expressed its deep concern about the continued detention of United Nations employees and civil society organizations in Yemen by the Houthi group, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of them and stopping the relevant violations.
The Euro -Mediterranean Observatory said that the Houthi group has been arbitrarily detained, at least 13 United Nations employees and 50 workers in international and national non -governmental organizations, while only 3 of them were released, while keeping others below The arbitrary reservation and without the possibility of reaching a lawyer.
On January 23, 2025, the Houthi group detained seven additional employees of the United Nations in the regions under their control, as they continued to be detained without any justification.
The Oruman Observatory highlighted that this arbitrary detention comes in the context of a repressive campaign targeting the humanitarian and human rights fields, which threatens the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen and hinders the efforts to provide life -saving aid.
He warned that Yemen faces worsening economic and social challenges as a result of the constant conflict and internal divisions. According to the International Bank report issued on November 31, 2024, the gross domestic product of Yemen shrinks by 1% in 2024, which led to the deterioration of living standards for most of the population, while the unemployment rate among young people increased from 14% before the war to 60% to July July 2024.
In addition, disturbances in humanitarian aid and basic imports have exacerbated the situation, so that about 17 million people suffer from food insecurity, in addition to the residents of the residents of safe drinking water and reliable sewage facilities, which led to the prevalence of preventive diseases Such as cholera, diphtheria, measles and fever, with women, girls, and marginalized groups to the most severe forms of suffering.
The Euro -Mediterranean Observatory indicated that, according to the United Nations of 2025, at least 19.5 million Yemeni populations depend on humanitarian aid, and thus these arrests are exacerbated by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen, where the United Nations had to suspend all movements Official within the Houthi -controlled areas and the surrounding areas.
The Euro -Mediterranean stressed that targeting humanitarian workers constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, especially the principles related to the protection of humanitarian workers and ensuring their freedom of work without intimidation or arbitrary detention.
The Observatory emphasized that all the conflicting parties in Yemen, as a party to an international armed conflict, must be legally binding on the provisions of international humanitarian law, especially Article 3 common to the Geneva Conventions of 1949, which prohibits arbitrary detention and guarantees the humanitarian treatment of detainees, and the Geneva Agreements The fourth, which emphasizes the need to protect civilians, including the humanitarian workers, while the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, prohibits arbitrary detention and the violation of fair trial guarantees.
