The UN Security Council voted unanimously today to renew sanctions imposed on Yemen for one year.
The sanctions include a ban on arms exports to Yemen, a travel ban on some Houthi officials, and a freeze on their assets.
The Security Council said in its statement that “the situation in Yemen continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security,” and added that “the current talks between the Yemeni parties must produce quick and tangible results for the population.”
The Council expressed its support for all steps towards a Yemeni-led negotiated political settlement under the auspices of the United Nations.
The renewal of the sanctions imposed on Yemen comes in light of the continuing war in the country, which has caused the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, and according to the United Nations, more than 24 million people in Yemen need humanitarian aid.
