French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna warned on Sunday that attacks in the Red Sea “cannot remain without response,” after a series of operations carried out by Ansar Allah against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Colonna said during her visit to Tel Aviv, “These attacks cannot remain unanswered,” stressing, “We are studying several options with our partners,” including a “defensive role to prevent this from happening again.”
This comes as the American website Politico quoted American officials as saying that the Pentagon had begun discussing the possibility of launching strikes on Houthi military targets.
Politico quoted an official familiar with the matter as saying that the Pentagon had in recent days transferred the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower to the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen, to support a possible American response to the attacks.
The official added that the US military also provided commanders with “options to carry out strikes against the Houthis.”
The American newspaper reported that the Biden administration was “hesitant to respond militarily to the Houthi attacks for fear of provoking Iran, which supports Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis,” adding, “But the significant increase in attacks in recent days may prompt senior American national security officials to change their position.” Their accounts.”
Consultations within the Pentagon are moving towards determining whether these potential strikes will directly target military targets of Ansar Allah in Yemen.
