Dozens of organizations warned on Thursday that millions of Yemenis across the country would slide toward high levels of food insecurity by the end of this year.
The organizations, which include United Nations relief organizations, called in a joint statement seen by Reuters for increased funding to continue helping “more than 21.6 million people, or 75 percent of Yemen’s population of 32.6 million.”
The statement added that “17 million people suffer from food insecurity” in Yemen, including 6.1 million people who have already entered “a dangerous stage of food shortages and acute malnutrition.”
The statement said that despite the scale of the humanitarian needs, by August 2023 the UN Humanitarian Response Plan had received only “31.2 percent of the total needs of $4.34 billion” for 2023, leading to dramatic and alarming reductions in aid.
