US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken revealed Washington's determination to support transforming the current truce in Yemen into an agreement on a comprehensive and permanent cessation of fighting.
In a meeting with the Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, yesterday (Monday), in New York, Blinken reaffirmed his country’s support for the Council and its commitment to promoting peace in Yemen and alleviating the suffering of the Yemenis, according to what the American minister announced in a blog post on his account on the X website ( Twitter (formerly).
For his part, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Blinken stressed, during the meeting that took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the necessity of starting a Yemeni political process that includes everyone, and under the umbrella of the United Nations.
The American envoy to Yemen, Timothy Lenderking, called for extending the truce in Yemen, calling on the international community to do more to extend it, in order to reduce the escalation and for more flights to arrive at Yemeni airports.
Lenderking reported that since the start of the truce there, the rate of civilian casualties has decreased by about 60%, and 20,000 Yemenis have been able to travel on commercial flights from Sanaa Airport for the first time since 2016.
