The head of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, called on Monday for the European Union to classify the Ansar Allah Houthi group as a global terrorist organization.
According to a statement issued by Al-Alimi’s media office, “The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council met in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, with the Head of the European Union Mission to Yemen, Gabriel Munera Vinales, and discussed developments in the local situation and opportunities for resuming UN mediation efforts to revive the political process in Yemen.” And the repercussions of the Houthi terrorist attacks against maritime shipping on international peace and security, and the living conditions of the Yemeni people.”
The statement added, "The meeting also touched on the path of economic and financial reforms, and the European role required to support these reforms and contain the continuing effects of the terrorist Houthi militia attacks on oil installations, including coordinated measures with brothers and friends to improve living conditions and sustain basic services." ".
Alimi praised "the European Union's support for the Leadership Council and the Yemeni government, and the aspirations of the Yemeni people to restore state institutions, including European pledges to alleviate human suffering."
Alimi stressed "the importance of European friends joining punitive measures against the Houthi militias and classifying them as an international terrorist organization."
Alimi affirmed his “full support for the efforts of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to launch a comprehensive political process in Yemen based on the results of the laudable efforts of the brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” according to the statement.
On January 17, the United States of America announced the designation of the Houthi group as a global terrorist organization, as a result of its attacks on international shipping, with the decision to enter into force on February 16.
