The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, on Tuesday condemned the Houthi attack that killed two Bahraini forces on the southern border of Saudi Arabia, offering his condolences to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and expressing his wishes for a speedy recovery for the wounded.
In a statement, published by the mission on its official website, Grundberg expressed his concern about the continued military tensions on the Yemeni border and several fronts in Yemen during the past months, which resulted in civilian casualties.
The UN envoy said that any renewed military escalation could again drag Yemen into a cycle of violence and undermine ongoing peace efforts. The continued outbreak of fighting demonstrates the fragility of the situation in Yemen.”
He added: “We communicated with everyone to urge them to exercise the utmost restraint at this critical time, and to use dialogue to resolve differences and reduce military tensions.”
Grundberg warned that “building the minimum level of trust required for constructive dialogue requires a great deal of effort, but it is easy to lose,” stressing the need to “take decisive steps towards a sustainable ceasefire throughout the country and the resumption of an inclusive political process to end the conflict.”
