The United States of America announced, on Wednesday, that Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea are adding significant costs to food and goods in Yemen.
The US Embassy in Yemen said through its account on the X platform: “The Houthi attacks on commercial cargo ships in the Red Sea directly affect the lives of people in Yemen.”
She added that “ships taking longer routes and increasing sailing times lead to an increase in the cost of food, medicine and fuel, as well as life-saving aid to people who desperately need it.”
She added, “The process of redirecting ships adds significant costs to food, medicine, fuel, and other goods in Yemen.”
The US embassy continued, “Hundreds of ships needing vital supplies now need to travel 4,000 miles around the southern tip of Africa in order to avoid passing through the Red Sea.”
Since last November, the Houthis have continued their attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and the group says that it is targeting Israeli ships associated with Israel or those heading to it, in order to “support the Palestinian people in Gaza.”
However, the United States and Britain announced that these attacks threaten the Red Sea as an important crossing for international trade, and they began attacks on Houthi sites, who responded by targeting American and British ships.
