The European Union strongly condemned an attack carried out by the Houthi group in Yemen the day before yesterday on the bulk carrier "True Confidence", flying the Barbados flag and owned by the State of Liberia, while it was crossing the Gulf of Aden, which led to a tragic loss of life and multiple injuries among crew members.
A press release published by the European Union External Action Service, on its official website a few hours ago, stated that this attack came after another attack launched by the Houthis on the Rubimar ship, which threatened to leave devastating environmental impacts in the Red Sea.
In its statement, the European Union reiterated that these Houthi attacks constitute violations of international law and threaten maritime security, freedom of navigation and global trade, and endanger the lives of sailors. These attacks must stop immediately, as confirmed by Security Council Resolution No. 2722, which was adopted on January 10.
The statement added that the European Union and its Member States, in accordance with international law, are determined to defend their ships against attacks that undermine freedom of navigation and their rights, and that it will continue, through the maritime operation ASPIDES, to protect maritime security as a global common good and protect the European Union’s commercial and security interests. And the broader international community.
