The US Navy announced on Saturday that a sailor serving aboard a destroyer died after “died at sea” during a deployment to the Red Sea. He is the first soldier whose death was announced without details since the start of American operations against the Houthis in the region.
Oriola Michael Aregbesola, 34, a flight mechanic's mate aboard the USS Mason, went to sea Wednesday. The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) determined that the death was a victim of a non-combat accident - according to what was reported by US media.
The Pentagon added that the incident is still under investigation.
The US Navy statement did not specify the circumstances of death.
Thousands of US soldiers are deployed in the Red Sea to confront Houthi attacks. The Houthis announce from time to time that they are targeting American destroyers.
