Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused the Biden administration of having a “weak spot” towards Iran amid Houthi rebels attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea.
Pompeo, who criticized President Biden's foreign policy course, said that the current administration's approach towards Tehran stems from the Obama administration and that it is not possible to negotiate the Iranian state-
“The Biden administration has a soft spot for Iran,” Pompeo said Sunday in an interview with radio talk show host John Catsimatidis on “Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM.
“It was that way from the beginning,” he added. “It’s something that came from the Obama team.”
Pompeo highlighted the current administration's lifting of the terrorist designation of the Houthis in Yemen and also expressed his regret that, from his point of view, it is not possible to negotiate with Tehran.
Pompeo said: “The Trump administration has classified the Houthis as terrorists.” They raised this terrorist designation. They simply do not understand that you cannot negotiate with the Iranians. “There is no possibility of negotiating with the regime in Iran... As long as the Biden administration does not confront the problem – the head of the snake – we are likely to see prices continue to rise here in the United States, and risks to our personnel serving in the region as well.”
The current US administration removed that designation in 2021 and considered reclassifying Yemen's Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization in January, a reaction after months-long attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea.
The Houthis carried out attacks and disrupted trade routes in the region, claiming to be protests against the brutal Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip. The attacks sparked strong reactions from the US military and its allies.
Since the attacks began, some shipping companies have redirected their ships to alternative routes, avoiding the Gulf of Aden and taking a longer route, which costs more money.
Pompeo added: “It is inexplicable to me how we allowed these idiots, these rebels - call them what you want, they call themselves the tribal name of the Houthis - why we did not go there and destroy their ability to control and launch attacks.”
p>He pointed out that the Houthis “not only prevent aid, but also control all products that cross the Red Sea, including oil.”
He added: “We saw the tragedy last week in Baltimore. “We know what happens when ports are closed, and how that affects the economy.”
