The United Nations announced, on Monday, that its special envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, held discussions in Doha with Qatari officials about the importance of strengthening regional and international support for UN mediation efforts in Yemen.
The Office of the UN Envoy explained in a statement published on its website: The discussion dealt with the progress made to support the parties to agree on measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and to commit to implementing a ceasefire throughout the country, and resuming an inclusive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
Grundberg said, "While the solution to the conflict must be negotiated by the Yemenis, increased regional cohesion undoubtedly gives greater hope of reaching a solution to the situation in Yemen."
He stressed that the region will play a major role in accompanying Yemen on the path to peace, as well as reconstruction and recovery.
Grundberg welcomed the support expressed by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
Grundberg participated in the launch event of the Global Institute for Strategic Research (GISR), where he dialogued with a group of experts about possible approaches to collective action to address the challenges of peacebuilding and reconstruction in Yemen.
The discussions also focused on the link between the peace and stability of Yemen and the security of the region and international trade routes.
