With pledges amounting to only $735 million, the sixth meeting of countries and donors hosted by the European Union in Brussels ended on Tuesday, regarding supporting the humanitarian response in Yemen.
The amount announced at the meeting represented only a quarter of the funding required to finance the 2024 humanitarian response plan announced by the United Nations, amounting to about $2.7 billion; This was considered by many to be a major failure following the hopes raised before the meeting was held by many of the UN and international bodies implementing life-saving relief projects.
The Norwegian Refugee Council in the Middle East and North Africa, one of the humanitarian organizations working in Yemen, confirmed in a statement issued that the donor meeting in Brussels failed to provide sufficient support for what Yemenis describe as “the daily struggle for survival.”
Samah Hadid, Head of Advocacy at the Norwegian Refugee Council in the Middle East and North Africa, said: The Brussels meeting represented a missed opportunity for the international community to take meaningful steps towards lifting Yemenis from the brink of extreme hunger and widespread disease. She added: “The meager donor pledges sent a bad signal that one of the worst humanitarian crises continues to be neglected by donor governments and will not receive the support it urgently needs.”
