Bayer Leverkusen won the German Super Cup this Saturday evening, after defeating Stuttgart at the BayArena on penalties (4-3), after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
Leverkusen opened the match strongly, scoring the lead in the 11th minute through Victor Boniface, before Stuttgart equalized in the 15th minute through Enzo Milot.
In the 37th minute, Martin Terrier received a red card, after he failed to tame a ball and violently tackled Ermidin Demirovich's ankle, putting Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso in a difficult position.
Alonso made an emergency substitution due to a numerical shortage, bringing on Jonathan Tah at the expense of striker Victor Boniface, which Stuttgart took advantage of and scored the lead goal in the 63rd minute through Deniz Undev.
Despite the numerical deficiency, Leverkusen, which won the league and cup double last season, regained its victorious spirit and scored the equalizer through Patrik Schick in the 88th minute.
The match went to penalty kicks, and the Leverkusen players were able to score all the kicks, while the Stuttgart duo, Franz Kratzig and Silas Katumba, missed.
