Football will soon witness radical changes, represented by the use of artificial intelligence techniques to reduce the controversy surrounding offside cases.
Offside cases are among the most controversial matters in football matches, especially since they have a direct role in awarding or canceling goals, which affects the results of the matches.
As time passes, technology enters football fields to help make sound refereeing decisions, including video referee technology (VAR) and Hawk Eye technology.
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing football
FIFA announced its cooperation with Hawk-Eye Innovations to launch a joint technological project to develop football.
FIFA said in an official statement that the project will include developing automated technology to monitor offside cases using artificial intelligence, by providing referees with accurate information immediately.
The new project works on producing algorithms to automate the detection of events on the field, which helps referees speed up the decision-making process regarding offside-related incidents.
This project comes to address one of the drawbacks of relying on referee assistance techniques, which is disrupting play and taking a long time to review controversial cases.
The new project is scheduled to be available to all federations of FIFA member states (211 federations)
