Al-Wasl of the UAE returned with a valuable 3-1 victory over the Iraqi Police Club for the fifth round of the AFC Elite Champions League on Tuesday evening, advancing to fourth place and close to qualifying.
Al-Wasl became fourth in the overall standings in the league competitions in the continental championship with 10 points and took an important step towards promotion, and the Emirati team comes only behind the qualifying trio, Al-Ahly, Al-Hilal and Al-Nasr.
Al-Wasl, which needs a single victory in its last 3 matches to qualify, opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Jonathan Santos, and Al-Shorta were able to equalize the score in the 50th minute of the second half through Fahd Al-Yousef.
The 64th minute brought a second goal for Al Wasl from the penalty spot by Fabio Lima, who excelled in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup when he led the UAE to a 5-0 victory over Qatar and scored 4 goals last week.
Al-Wasl settled matters in stoppage time of the second half through Nicolas Jimenez via another penalty kick in the 90th + 2nd minute.
After this loss, Al-Shorta remained in 11th place and penultimate with only two points.
