Real Madrid won the Intercontinental Cup and became world champions after an easy 3-0 victory over Mexico's Pachuca in the final at the Losail World Cup Stadium on Wednesday, while Carlo Ancelotti became the most decorated in the history of the Royal Club with 15 titles.
Real's coronation comes exactly two years after Argentina's historic victory in the 2022 World Cup in the same stadium, after it won on penalties over France, which had then scored 3 goals by Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe opened the scoring for Real Madrid 37 minutes after the start, taking advantage of Vinicius Junior's pass, who dribbled past goalkeeper Carlos Moreno, refused to shoot from a tight angle, and gave a gift to the French captain.
Brazilian Rodrigo added the second goal for Real Madrid, after receiving Mbappe's pass, dribbled past more than one player and shot a powerful ball from the edge of the penalty area into the net.
The video referee intervenes twice
The referee needed to review the shot on the video referee screen, amid doubts about Jude Bellingham’s interference and his presence in an offside position, but in the end it was decided to award the goal.
Real coach Ancelotti felt reassured after the second goal, and replaced Mbappe a few minutes later, in light of the absence of a threat from the Mexican team, which had hardly reached the final.
5 minutes before the end of regular time, Lucas Vázquez won a penalty kick, after a mistake by Moroccan Oussama Idrissi. The referee awarded the kick after reviewing the replay, then Vinicius scored the third goal, although goalkeeper Moreno almost blocked the shot.
A new history for Ancelotti
Ancelotti wrote history with Real after becoming the most decorated coach with the Royal Club, with 15 titles.
Pachuca had won the semi-final over Al-Ahly of Egypt on penalty kicks, even though it was 3-1 behind during the execution of the kicks, and before taking advantage of 3 missed kicks from the African champion.
Real Madrid previously won the Intercontinental Cup in its old form 3 times in 1960, 1998 and 2002, and also won the Club World Cup 5 times in the years 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and
